There is a famous illustration Drew Struzan painted for George Lucas which features the director surrounded by his beloved cinematic creations. In a similar way I wanted to illustrate the creative life of JJ Abrams. Arranged in this posterI have placed a number of famous characters and stories that have been produced by JJ. This includes Han, Luke, Leia and the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars VII; Jake and Kate from Lost; Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible; Sydney and Jack from Alias; Joe, Alice and Deputy Jackson Lamb from Super 8; and finally Spock and Kirk from Star Trek. Down in the corner you will also find a Bad Robot. In the middle is placed the mystery box. The famous gift he received from his grandfather.

To create this image I researched and collaged as many reference images as I could find. Using Photoshop I created a mock up and tested as many compositions as I could. When I settled on a final I switched to Manga studio and my favorite Frenden brushes to sketch the outlines. From there I switched to Photoshop to create the gray scale under painting. Once that was completed I painstakingly colored the figures using color adjustment layers. To complete the image I merged the layers and once again used a combination of Frenden brushes and the mixer brushes to render the forms and create the distinct outlines. I final step was to apply random texture to the image. This was all completed on my Surface 3 tablet.

May the force be with you…
